MABA Alpaca Celebration

Registration for MABA 2009 Alpaca Celebration

UPDATE!: Spin-Off registration is now CLOSED.
(Entries had to be postmarked by August 7, 2009.)

  1. Entries must be a minimum of 2 oz of prime blanket fiber and shorn after November 1st, 2008. Ribbons will be given for 1st through 4th. Entries will be on display at the MABA ALPACA CELEBRATION. This is an AOBA certified Spin-Off. All AOBA rules will apply

  2. ENTRIES MUST INCLUDE: Entry Form, 2 ounces of prime blanket fiber, photocopy of ARI registration certificate, completed entry tag and a color photograph of the alpaca (min 3x5 max 8x10). Entries must be submitted by the current owner, farm or member of the partnership as shown on the ARI certificate. All entries that aren’t from the current owner must submit a owner of record form with a signature from the current owner. Do not fold the ARI registration certificate or photograph. They will be on display with the judged fiber and skein at the show.

  3. ENTRY LIMITATIONS: Entries are limited to three samples per breed type, per age, per color designation.

  4. SUBMITTED FIBER: Two ounces of prime blanket fiber must be submitted along with a completed “MABA ALPACA CELEBRATION 2009 Spin-off Entry Tag” in an unmarked gallon size zip lock bag. PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ON THE BAG. Fiber can not be carded, combed, washed, trimmed or otherwise enhanced. You can hand pick debris and vegetable matter out of the sample. Fiber with debris and vegetable matter will be marked down accordingly. Do not send more than 3 ounces.

    B: 1st birthday - 24 months
    C: 2nd birthday – 36 months

  6. CLASS DIVISIONS: Classes will be divided into major color groups, white, fawn, brown, black, grey, indefinite and multi if possible. Colors with less than 4 entries will be combined and judged by light, dark and mixed. Final determination of class divisions will be made by the Spin Off show superintendent. Final determination of entry colors will be made by the judge.

  7. COST: Spin Off entries are $28.00 each.

  8. STAPLE LENGTH: Fiber must be at least 3” long. Fiber samples less than 3” will be disqualified. Huacaya: No maximum length under 1st birthday. For 1 year and older the maximum length is 8 inches. Suri: No maximum length under 2nd birthday. For 2 years and older the maximum is 9 inches.

  9. JUDGING: The judge will prepare and spin a portion of the fiber. Scoring will be based on first impression, staple length, cleanliness, lack of 2nd cuts, lack of guard hair or medullated fiber, lock structure, luster (suris) or brightness (huacayas), ease of spinning, ease of preparation, softness of yarn, loft and texture.

  10. DISQUALIFICATION: Fiber that is unsound, felted, contains tender breaks, mats, excessive debris will be discounted accordingly but will not be disqualified. Points may be deducted for failure to submit at least 2 ounces of fiber for proper sampling and judging. Fiber submitted exhibiting parasitic infestation or fiber not meeting the minimum or maximum lengths will be disqualified. The reasons for disqualification shall be recorded on the score card and the Judge’s worksheet.

  11. ENTRY RETURNS: You may pick up your entries and awards after 3 PM on Sunday November 15th, 2009. If you are requesting your entry to be returned via mail, please include a shipping fee of $8.00 per 6 submissions with your entry. Entries not picked or those without the shipping fee will not be returned.

  12. SEND ENTIRE ENTRY: Please fill out the Entry form online. Then print and mail the Spin-Off entry Form (keep a copy for your records), Fiber Sample, ARI Registration Certificate Copy, Photo, and Check made payable to MABA to:
