This clinic will be comprised of a morning lecture with a power-point presentation, to cover female reproduction/breeding; reproductive anatomy and physiology, breeding and pregnancy diagnosis options, gestational development, care of the pregnant dam, normal and abnormal cria presentation and care of the newborn as well as the high-risk cria.

The afternoon will include a "hands-on wet-lab" using uterine simulators, that will challenge participants to diagnose the contents of the uterus, discuss a proposed delivery plan, and identify and correct dystocias to deliver the cria safely. Emergency training, and a lot of fun!

  • How a Dam prepares for birth

  • Care of the newborn cria

  • Premature crias
  • Three Stages of labor
  • Vaccinations for crias
  • Infertility Issues
  • The importance of Colostrum
  • Indications of problems in new crias such as choanal atresia (closed nasal passages), heart or lung problems, hypothermia, diarrhea, dehydration, limb deformities, hernia and more...
  • Lactation

 

A course-book, light breakfast (STARTING AT 8 AM) and lunch will be provided. Class size limited to 28 participants to optimize learning. To reserve your spot please email secretary@marylandalpacas.org.

New Groove Alpacas is located about 18 miles south of Wilmington DE and is easily accessible from the Delmarva peninsula, SE PA, and NJ.  Closest airports are PHL (45 minutes) and BWI (80 minutes).  There are several hotels in the area for overnight guests (contact MABA secretary for info.)
