Alpaca Farm Days 2008 [back to the top]

Have you ever wondered what the most sought after natural fiber in the world feels like? What can we learn about the animals that have graced us with this luxurious gift? What is really involved to become part of the alpaca industry, and why is it growing by leaps and bounds in this area?

On March 8th and 9th, nine local breeders will be hosting Alpaca Farm Days from 10am-4pm. There will be a free seminar each day, Alpacas 101, by Kate McKelvie. There will also be an ongoing Roundtable where visitors can ask breeders questions, alpacas for viewing and sale, alpaca fiber and fiber products for sale, spinning and felting demonstrations, free raffle, and fun for all.

"Alpaca Reality" Seminar [back to the top]

This all-inclusive seminar runs from Friday evening through Sunday. It contains all the information you will need to become a successful alpaca breeder. This seminar is essential for all potential and new alpaca breeders. This seminar covers both Huacaya and Suri alpacas. We will discuss the strengths of both types of alpacas, as well as how to breed both. This knowledge is essential in helping you pick your herd.

Topics include evaluating and purchasing alpacas, alpaca husbandry, reproductive issues, and how to make informed genetic breeding decisions. The featured presenters are Al & Donna Elser who successfully managed 200 alpacas at Thompson Hollow Alpacas for over 10 years. Medical and reproductive topics will be taught by Dr. Jim Cohagen, DVM. Cost includes intensive seminar, materials, plus continental breakfasts and lunch.

Felting Workshop [back to the top]

Wini Labrecque will be conducting a felting workshop hosted by Shepherd's Purse Alpacas and Whispering Meadows Alpacas in Mount Airy, MD. At this full-day workshop, we will be learning the techniques of wet and needle felting a fashionable and usable tote/bag. Breakfast, lunch and all materials are included in this all-exclusive workshop with Wini for only $135.
